Award Guidelines

Regional Outstanding Student Award

The SAM Regional Outstanding Student Award exists to recognize the hard work, growth and development of Collegiate Members over the course of the year.

Each campus chapter Advisor may nominate a maximum of three qualified students for this award.  Eligible chapters must have a minimum of 10 paid students to be eligible to nominate Collegiate Members for this award. Nominations should be made online and received by SAM National no later than March 3, 2018.

An advisor wishing to nominate a student will notify the student of their nomination and together they will submit a properly formatted application for the award.  Each nominated student is required to submit the following:

  • A personal narrative of no more than 500 words highlighting the value of participating in SAM.
  • A vita of achievements while a member of the College Chapter.  This vita will include:

Academic achievements – Highlighting any business or management related course success.

Extracurricular achievements – Highlighting any recognition from the college or surrounding community that speaks to the development of the Collegiate Member outside of SAM.

Service to the Society – Highlighting the participation and service to the Society for Advancement of Management at the National, Regional, and/or Chapter level.

Professional Resume – Highlighting work and professional service and achievements.

Any supporting documentation of achievements (newspaper items, published management articles, etc.) should be included within this section of your application. 

  • A letter of recommendation from the Chapter Advisor.

To ensure proper formatting of documents and images, all nomination components (Personal narrative, vita of achievements, letter of recommendation) must be saved in PDF format and uploaded with the nomination application.

Collegiate members are not required to be registered for the 2018 SAM International Business Conference to receive recognition as a Regional Outstanding Award Recipient.  Arrangements for a suitable presentation of the award locally may be available upon request.

Outstanding Faculty Advisor

The Board of Directors will select up to three (3) SAM chapter advisors to receive honors as National Outstanding Faculty Advisors.

To nominate your chapter advisor for this award, please use the online submission form and attach a letter of recommendation from your chapter.  In your nomination please include the following:

  • Describe up to three examples of how the advisor contributed to the development of chapter members.
  • Describe the advisor’s contributions as an advocate for your college’s chapter in the areas of awareness, funding, and visibility on campus and in the community.

Advisors recognized on the national level will have demonstrated a commitment to management excellence, mentoring, and the development of the chapter members in the discipline of management.

Advisors are not required to be registered for the 2018 SAM International Business Conference to receive recognition. Arrangements for a suitable presentation of the award locally may be available upon request.

Nominations should be made online and received by SAM National no later than March 3, 2018.

Campus Chapter Performance Program

The Campus Chapter Performance Program is designed to reward chapters for practicing good management skills.

To be eligible to participate, a chapter must have a minimum of 15 paid members.

No later than March 3, 2018, each chapter can submit an annual report of why the chapter should be considered among the three most outstanding SAM chapters in their division.

The Campus Chapter Performance Program report must meet the following submission guidelines in order to be considered for recognition:

  • A cover page indicating the chapter’s name, chapter mailing address, phone number and advisors name.
  • A total number of dues paying members active within the chapter
  • A listing of the active members within the chapter; including name, mailing address, and e-mail address
  • A list of fundraisers (if any) the chapter has undertaken
  • A list of events (if any) the chapter has sponsored or co-sponsored
  • A list of community projects undertaken (if any) and the results of those projects
  • All previous chapter newsletters within the preceding 12 months.

If chapter news is distributed via social media or website, a link will be sufficient.  Please provide the contact information for the person responsible for the management of the content online.

  • A report of the chapter’s participation in the organization of any of the following:

Formation of a professional chapter

Formation of a new campus chapter

A Local SAM Conference

  • A list of previous SAM Awards
  • A twelve (12) month chapter plan (if available) for the next year

Chapter Financial Statements for the preceding 12 months (treasurer’s reports, income statement, and balance sheet).

Guideline items listed in bold are required to be considered for recognition as an outstanding chapter.  Additional items are examples of information you can (and should if available) include.  Exhibits and appendices can be added to substantiate the year’s accomplishments and should be referenced within the report.  Exhibits not specifically mentioned within the report body, will not be considered. To ensure proper formatting of documents and images, all nomination components must be saved in PDF format and uploaded with the nomination application.

Once reports are submitted, a panel of judges will review the reports and determine the winners in each category. There are awards for first, second, and third place winners in each category. Categories are Large, Medium, and Small Chapter.  Please note that chapter classifications (size) will be determined after reports are submitted.

Chapters are not required to be registered for the 2018 SAM International Business Conference to receive recognition. Arrangements for a suitable presentation of the award locally may be available upon request.
